Hosea M. Nelson earned a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of California at Berkeley in 2005 and a Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology in 2013. Following his doctoral studies, he underwent postdoctoral training at the University of California at Berkeley before joining the faculty at UCLA in 2015. In 2021, he transitioned to the Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Caltech. Prof. Nelson's research program focuses on developing enabling technologies for chemical synthesis, with a primary emphasis on two avenues. The first is a structural chemistry subgroup that develops new electron microscopy techniques for characterizing complex molecules that traditional methods cannot address. The second is a synthetic subgroup that concentrates on developing novel chemical reactions to facilitate the efficient and rapid synthesis of bioactive compounds.
Most Caltech graduate programs are PhD-only. GRE General and Subject tests vary by department; many have made them optional or no longer accept them.
