Biography

Hugh McCann is an Emeritus Professor in the School of Engineering at the University of Edinburgh, where he was appointed Head of the School in 2013. He completed his undergraduate studies in Physics and earned his PhD from the University of Glasgow. Prior to his academic career, he spent six years as a post-doctoral researcher in High Energy Particle Physics, collaborating with notable institutions such as CERN in Geneva and DESY in Hamburg. He has also worked for ten years in research and development at the Royal Dutch/Shell Group, focusing on combustion, explosion hazards, and lubricant formulation. In 1996, he was appointed as a Professor of Industrial Tomography at UMIST, which later became the University of Manchester, and served as Head of Electrical & Electronic Engineering from 1999 to 2002. McCann has held significant leadership roles, including Chair of the UK Professors and Heads of Electrical Engineering from 2003 to 2005, and Associate Dean for Research at the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences at Manchester from 2010 to 2013. A Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering since 2009, his research interests include industrial tomography and electrical impedance tomography, with an emphasis on collaborative projects that intersect academia and industry.
