Dr. Hugh Shewell

Biography

Dr. Hugh Shewell is a Professor at Carleton University and holds a cross-appointment in the School of Social Work. He possesses degrees in Social Work from Carleton University, the University of British Columbia, and a PhD from the University of Toronto. Dr. Shewell has substantial experience in teaching courses related to social administration, community work, and social theory within both undergraduate and graduate programs. His research and publications focus on Indigenous-State relations, social welfare, social rights, poverty, and the historical context of social policy in Canada, particularly as it pertains to Indigenous communities. Dr. Shewell has held various leadership roles within the university, including serving as the Associate Dean of the Faculty of Public Affairs and Director of the School of Social Work. He has actively contributed to panels and conferences discussing social policy and professional social work education, emphasizing the importance of Indigenous perspectives in social welfare practices.
