Biography

Hugh Watkins is a Radcliffe Professor of Medicine at the University of Oxford, specializing in Cardiovascular Medicine. He leads the Watkins Group, focusing on inherited heart diseases, particularly hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which is a Mendelian condition linked to sudden cardiac death. His research utilizes molecular genetic analysis to understand disease mechanisms and identify therapeutic targets. Ongoing clinical trials are testing new medical therapies derived from his findings. Dr. Watkins is also a principal investigator for CureHeart and contributes to the development of molecular biology applications in clinical settings. He collaborates extensively with colleagues across Europe to study coronary artery disease, a major cause of premature mortality, and has chaired international consortia to advance research in this area.
