Hugo de Waardt is an Associate Professor and track leader for high-capacity trunk transmission at the Electro-Optical Communication group in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). His key areas of expertise include telecommunication engineering, optical communication, optical amplifiers, and opto-electronic transmitters and receivers for high capacity fibre-optic transmission. Hugo's research interests focus on achieving the highest possible transmission capacity through high-speed direct laser modulation combined with optical pre-amplified detection. He has researched wavelength division multiplexing technologies and optical time domain multiplexing, eventually exploring mode transmission in combination with coherent detection. His work has successfully integrated semiconductor optoelectronic devices with low-loss optical fibres, significantly pushing the transmission capacity of single-core fibres from the Megabit level into the Terabit domain, thus becoming a main enabler of the Internet. He has received his MSc in 1980 and PhD in 1995 from Delft University of Technology, Netherlands. Since 1981, he has worked in various capacities in optical transmission and has coordinated numerous research projects and initiatives related to broadband photonics and optical transmission.
