Biography

Associate Professor Hui-chieh Loy is part of the Department of Philosophy at the National University of Singapore's Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Currently serving as the Vice Dean (Academic Affairs) of NUS College, Loy is involved in the honors college of the National University of Singapore. He chairs multiple committees including the NUS Philosophy, Politics, Economics joint program committee, and the NUS Workgroup on AI Teaching and Learning. Loy earned his BA (Hons), MA in Philosophy from NUS, and a PhD in Philosophy from the University of California, Berkeley. His research focuses primarily on early Chinese philosophy, while also collaborating across cognate fields such as the history of science in East Asia and contemporary notions of political legitimacy in the region. He has academic interests that encompass ancient Greek philosophy, early modern ethics, and political philosophy. Loy is a member of the editorial board for several journals, including Chinese Comparative Philosophy and the Philosophy Compass Journal. He has been actively involved in educational research and has taught a variety of courses covering topics from Chinese Philosophy (Pre-Qin Era) to courses tailored for the University Scholars Programme. He has also supervised diverse student projects related to philosophy and social sciences.
