Biography

Hui Cao is the John C. Malone Professor of Applied Physics at Yale University, with additional appointments in Physics. He received his Ph.D. from Stanford University, an M.A. from Princeton University, and a B.S. from Peking University. His research focuses on understanding and controlling light transport in complex photonic nanostructures. This work spans several fields including mesoscopic physics, nonlinear dynamics, laser physics, nanophotonics, and biophotonics, involving techniques like nanofabrication, material characterization, and optical measurements. Current projects include the development of novel light sources for biomedical imaging, coherent control of light in strongly scattering media, and the fabrication of multifunctional photonic devices. Throughout his career, Cao has received numerous accolades including election to the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2021, as well as the Rolf Landauer Medal from the International ETOPIM Association in the same year. He is a Fellow of several prestigious organizations such as the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).
