Hyeouk Chris Hahm is a researcher dedicated to reducing health disparities in Asian American populations, with a particular emphasis on building empirical evidence related to health risk behaviors such as self-harm, suicide, and HIV risk behaviors. His research has been funded by the National Institutes of Mental Health, National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, and the National Science Foundation. Hahm has developed and tested a theoretical framework that explains suicidal behaviors in Asian American women and has created culturally grounded interventions including AWARE (Asian American Women's Actions for Resilience and Empowerment) and Youth AWARE, which have been implemented in colleges and high schools. Additionally, he has developed the AWARE Training Certificate aimed at training social workers, mental health counselors, and educational professionals to support young Asian-American women facing challenges. Hahm is also involved with various editorial boards for journals in his field and has authored over 80 peer-reviewed publications, presenting at over 250 professional talks nationally and internationally. His work has garnered recognition, including Boston University Innovator’s Award and features in media outlets such as National Public Radio, The New York Times, and The Washington Post. Hahm is currently the Vice-President Elect of the Society for Social Work and Research.
