Biography

Hyong Kim is the Drew D. Perkins Professor and Program Director at Carnegie Mellon University in Thailand. He has an extensive background in Electrical and Computer Engineering with advanced research in network and computer system architectures. He developed the Tera ATM switch architecture which has been commercialized by AMD and Samsung. Kim has founded several startups in the networking field, including Scalable Networks, which specialized in Gigabit-Ethernet switching and was acquired by FORE Systems. He later founded AcceLight Networks, focusing on optical networking. He directed CyLab Korea from 2004 to 2008, fostering international research collaborations. Over his career, Kim has authored more than 130 published papers and holds over 10 patents in computing technologies. His academic journey includes earning a Ph.D. and a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Toronto and a Bachelor’s degree from McGill University. Kim's research interests also extend into mobile systems and computer/storage systems, making significant contributions to both academia and industry.
