Biography

Hyun Kate Lee is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Toronto. She completed her undergraduate studies in cell biology at the University of Michigan, where she was a researcher in Sean Morrison’s laboratory focusing on stem cells and tissue repair in mice. She pursued her doctorate at the University of North Carolina under Bob Duronio, studying cell growth and the regulation of DNA replication damage. Subsequently, Dr. Lee undertook postdoctoral research at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics in Dresden, Germany, working with Tony Hyman to investigate the dynamics of membrane-less organelles in cell function. Her research explores the mechanisms by which cells respond to stress and the roles of biomolecular condensates—non-membrane-bound organelles—during cellular responses to damage. Dr. Lee's lab employs quantitative cell biology techniques, biochemical methods, and computational approaches to study how cells detect and mitigate damage while maintaining health. She is committed to understanding the cellular mechanisms that contribute to diseases such as cancer and neurodegeneration. In addition to her research, she is dedicated to teaching and mentoring students in the field.
