Dr. Hyunjoon Park

Biography

Hyunjoon Park holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, completed in 2005. He also earned an M.S. in Population Health Science in 2003 and an M.A. in Sociology in 1997 from Sungkyunkwan University, and a B.A. in 1995 from the same institution. He is the Korea Foundation Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania and serves as the Director of the James Joo-Jin Kim Program in Korean Studies. His research focuses on the impact of contextual factors in educational settings, particularly how schools and families affect children's education. He utilizes large-scale international data to examine educational stratification and the influence of school and family factors on academic performance across different national contexts. His work includes investigations into the effects of single-sex schooling and the implications of rapid family changes in South Korea on children's education and well-being. He has published extensively in the area of education and sociology, making significant contributions to understanding educational systems and policies.
