Biography

I.L.J. Melchior's main research interests are collective memory, national identity, and Eastern Europe. Currently, he is teaching courses at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, bridging sociology and anthropology. In 2015, he defended his PhD thesis titled 'Guardians of Living History: Persistence of the Past in Post-Soviet Estonia' at VU University Amsterdam within the department of Social and Cultural Anthropology. He has a strong background in applied social scientific research alongside his academic positions. His ethnographic fieldwork in Estonia has provided him with significant insights, which he enjoys sharing with students at FASoS. He hopes to contribute his experiences from applied research and expertise in Eastern Europe to the department. He conducts his work on Mondays and Thursdays, with open office hours scheduled for Thursdays from 16:00 to 17:45. Everyone is welcome!
