Biography

Iain MacNeil joined the School of Law in 2003 and was appointed Alexander Stone Chair in Commercial Law in 2005. He is a graduate of the University of Glasgow (LLB) and the University of Edinburgh (PhD). Iain’s early career as an investment analyst in the City of London focused on the insurance sector. He transitioned to academia after completing his PhD, titled 'Legal Framework for EU Single Market Insurance'. He served as Head of the School from 2015 to 2019 and led the Corporate & Financial Law Research Group. His primary research interests include corporate governance, financial regulation, and investment law, with recent publications examining the interaction of hard and soft law and the influence of international standards. Iain is also involved in various roles, such as honorary professor at the National Law University Delhi and trustee of the British Institute of International and Comparative Law. He has worked extensively on projects related to EU financial sector compliance and the ethical dimensions of financial regulations during the global financial crisis. His work has included significant collaborations that have expanded his research into the dynamics of corporate law in different social systems across the globe, particularly in light of regulatory challenges and sustainability issues.
