Biography

Professor Iain Scobbie is the Chair in International Law at the University of Manchester, having joined the institution in September 2013. He previously held the position of Sir Joseph Hotung Research Professor at the School of Law, Human Rights, and Peace Building in the Middle East at SOAS, University of London, of which he remains affiliated. Professor Scobbie's academic journey includes studies at the Universities of Edinburgh and Cambridge, as well as the Australian National University. His doctoral dissertation focused on legal reasoning within the judicial function of the International Court of Justice. His research interests encompass various facets of international humanitarian law and the theory of international law, with a particular emphasis on international adjudication and the role of the International Court of Justice. He has served as a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the European Journal of International Law and has been an editor for the EJIL: Talk! blog. Additionally, he chairs the committee for the Lieber Prize, which recognizes outstanding work by young authors in the field of law and armed conflict, conferred by the Francis Lieber Society, a special interest group within the American Society of International Law. Furthermore, Professor Scobbie is the founder and director of the Manchester International Law Centre, which focuses on law related to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, addressing essential global objectives.
