Biography

Ian Arawjo is an Assistant Professor at the Université de Montréal in the Department of Computer Science and Operations Research starting January 2024. He holds a PhD from Cornell University in Information Sciences, where he was advised by Professor Tapan Parikh. His dissertation work focused on the intersection of computing and culture, exploring programming as a social and cultural practice. He possesses experience in applying a range of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) methods, including ethnographic fieldwork, archival research, the development of innovative systems used by thousands of people, and conducting usability studies. Currently, he is involved in projects at the intersection of programming, AI, and HCI, particularly investigating how new AI capabilities can help reimagine programming practice. He is also engaged in evaluating Large Language Models (LLMs) through high-visibility open-source projects such as ChainForge. His first-author papers have won awards at major HCI conferences including CHI, CSCW, and UIST.
