Biography

Professor Ian Bates holds a Chair in Pharmacy Education at University College London (UCL) School of Pharmacy, where he serves as Head of Educational Development. He is a Faculty Fellow of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society and currently on secondment to the National Health Service (NHS) London as the academic lead for university teaching hospitals. Professor Bates is also a Professor of Integrated Care Education at Whittington Health NHS Trust and Director of Education Development at the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP), where he leads an international team partnered with UNESCO, aiming to outreach to 4 million pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists worldwide. He has been Editor-in-Chief of Pharmacy Education, an international research journal, since its inception in 2000. Additionally, he is a Fellow of several prestigious societies and a Trustee of the European Pharmaceutical Students' Association. In recognition of his global leadership in education workforce development, he was awarded a Fellowship by the FIP in 2012. Professor Bates coordinates the FIP-UNESCO Global UNITWIN Network for Education and provides independent advisory services on educational matters to the Royal Pharmaceutical Society. He has also received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the UK Clinical Pharmacy Association for his leadership in international education development.
