Biography

Ian C. Bourg is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Princeton University, with additional affiliations at the High Meadows Environmental Institute and other related institutes. He completed his B.Eng. in Chemical Engineering from the Institut National des Sciences Appliquées, Toulouse, in 1999, followed by a Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, in 2004. His research focuses on the interactions at liquid-water interfaces across various natural environments, specifically exploring surface chemistry and mass fluxes that influence environmental phenomena such as contaminant fate and transport, metal biogeochemical cycling, and soil carbon dynamics. Bourg utilizes advanced atomistic simulations and macroscopic models to gain insights into critical environmental processes, particularly those related to geologic carbon sequestration and soil remediation. He has received several awards, including the Excellence Mentoring Award from Princeton SEAS in 2025 and an NSF CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation in 2018. His work aims to improve representations of environmental processes and inform advancements in water treatment and environmental management.
