Biography

Professor Ian Bruce is a leading expert in Rheumatology and currently serves as the Academic Director at Health Innovation Manchester and the Director of the NIHR Manchester Biomedical Research Centre. He qualified in Medicine at Queen's University Belfast in 1988 and subsequently gained membership in the Royal College of Physicians. His clinical training in Rheumatology took place in Northern Ireland, culminating in the completion of his MD thesis on the pathogenesis of systemic vasculitis in 1995. Since joining the University of Manchester in 1998, Professor Bruce has focused his research on the intersection between inflammatory rheumatic diseases and cardiovascular health. He leads the Connective Tissue Disease programme within the NIHR Manchester Biomedical Research Centre, where he investigates long-term outcomes in conditions such as systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis. A noteworthy contributor to the advancement of the understanding of genetic factors in common diseases, he has held leadership roles in significant research initiatives including the MASTERPLANS Consortium and various studies funded by Wellcome Trust and Arthritis Research UK. Professor Bruce is an active member of several professional organizations and serves on multiple Data Safety Steering Committees.
