Biography

Ian Cotton is a professor at the University of Manchester, specifically within the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. He has a BEng in Electrical Engineering from the University of Sheffield and completed his PhD at UMIST. Beginning his career in an electricity distribution company, he returned to the University to further his academic pursuits in high voltage technology. Ian has been employed at the University since 1998 and is known for his extensive research in high voltage systems, including aerospace applications and power system induced corrosion. He works in the HV Laboratories at the University, which houses the UK's largest 2MV impulse generator. Professor Cotton has supervised 15 PhD students and is the author or co-author of 100 papers. His contributions to the field have led to several patents and the establishment of a spin-off company, Arago Technology. His research interests center around high voltage aerospace systems, power electronics, and power system transients, contributing significantly to the understanding and implementation of vibrant energy solutions.
