Biography

Ian Hewson is a Professor of Microbiology with a focus on biological oceanography and marine ecology. He specializes in the impacts of viruses on marine ecosystem function. Hewson received his Bachelor of Science in Botany from the University of Queensland in 1997 and obtained his PhD in Marine Environmental Biology from the University of Southern California in 2005. Following his doctorate, he worked as a postdoctoral associate at the Department of Ocean Sciences at the University of California, Santa Cruz from 2005 to 2008 before joining Cornell University. He has served as the Director of Undergraduate Studies for the Marine Biology major. His research interests encompass Marine Microbiology, Marine Ecology, Biological Oceanography, and Marine Science. Hewson is committed to outreach and extension, focusing on high school student teacher training in aquatic microbiology and offering field-based outreach opportunities.
