Ian Hewson is a Biological Oceanographer and Marine Ecologist whose research focuses on the impacts of viruses on marine ecosystem function. He obtained his Bachelor of Science with Honours in Botany from the University of Queensland in 1997, followed by a PhD in Marine Environmental Biology from the University of Southern California in 2005. His research interests include Marine Microbiology, Marine Ecology, Biological Oceanography, and Marine Science, along with teaching focuses such as marine biology, marine ecology, biological oceanography, and environmental virology. He is actively involved in outreach and extension activities focusing on high school student teacher training in aquatic microbiology and offers field-based outreach opportunities.
