Biography

Professor Ian James specializes in twentieth-century contemporary French literature and philosophy, focusing particularly on the interplay between philosophy and areas of knowledge such as aesthetics, artistic practice, and political thought. He has produced extensive writings on significant contemporary French philosophers including Jean-Luc Nancy, Catherine Malabou, Bernard Stiegler, François Laruelle, and Paul Virilio. His recent publication, 'Technique Thought' (2019), investigates the relationship between post-deconstructive French philosophy and the sciences to cultivate a distinctive form of philosophical naturalism. He is the editor of 'Paragraph: Journal of Modern Critical Theory' and is currently involved in related research projects that explore biodeconstruction, semiotics, and biological theory, aiming to advance 'post-continental' naturalism derived from his previous work. Additionally, he is focused on narrative reconfiguration in literary naturalism through critical readings of Marcel Proust and Pascal Quignard, and he is working on the book 'Rethinking Literary Naturalism: Proust, Quignard, Life', which is forthcoming from Liverpool University Press.
