Ian graduated with a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Queensland in 1989. He completed postdoctoral research at the Research School of Chemistry at the Australian National University, the Department of Physics at the Australian Defence Force Academy, the University of Wollongong, and the University of Sydney. Since joining Macquarie University in 2000, Ian has focused on environmental chemistry, particularly in gas-phase atmospheric chemistry and chemistry education. His research includes greenhouse gas fluxes at the atmosphere-soil interface, emissions from livestock, and the formation and characterization of secondary organic aerosols. Currently, he is developing new attractant compounds for population monitoring and control of insects, particularly fruit flies. Ian also founded the Advancing Science Enhancing Laboratory Learning (ASELL) project and is the Director of the National Indigenous Science Education Program (NISEP), which aims to improve science engagement among low socioeconomic communities. He has received several awards for his contributions to teaching and learning in chemistry, including the Macquarie University Vice-Chancellor's Award for Teaching Excellence and the Pearson Educator of the Year by the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI).
