Dr. Ian Leary

Biography

Professor Ian Leary is a distinguished academic in the field of Pure Mathematics at the University of Southampton, where he has been serving since 2011. Prior to this, he held a professorship in Mathematics at Ohio State University from 2006 to 2011 and was an Associate Professor there from 2004 to 2006. His academic journey includes positions as Reader and Lecturer at the University of Southampton, as well as several postdoctoral fellowships across prestigious institutions including MPI Bonn, University of Cambridge, ETH Zurich, and more. Leary's research interests lie primarily in Geometric Group Theory, focusing on topics such as Cohomology Groups, Classifying Spaces, and Subgroups. His work is characterized by the construction of interesting groups and examining their properties within graphical small cancellation. He is involved in supervising PhD students and has made significant contributions through various research projects, including collaborations funded by EPSRC and the Leverhulme Trust. Leary has also taught a variety of subjects, including Representation Theory and Number Theory, and has been active in supervising undergraduate research projects.
