Biography

Ian Loader is a Professor of Criminology and a Professorial Fellow at Souls College. He is also an Honorary Professorial Fellow at the School of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Melbourne. Ian is a Fellow of the British Academy and the Royal Society of Arts. He is the author of numerous books, edited collections, theoretical, and empirical papers addressing themes such as civic engagement, security, public and private policing, disorder, justice, penal policy culture, crime control, political ideologies, and the democratic purposes of criminology. His current research focuses on environmental harm and is funded by the Leverhulme Trust through a Major Research Fellowship for the project 'Car harms: Automobility objects criminology', which aims to explore the intersection of automobility and criminology in the context of climate change. Ian teaches a graduate seminar entitled 'Criminology of the car' and has conducted studies, including one funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, examining public perceptions of crime and insecurity in Macclesfield, Cheshire. His work has been published in prestigious journals and he is actively involved in supervising doctoral students and post-doctoral researchers in various areas of criminology.
