Biography

Ian M. MacDonald is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of Alberta, where he has served as a past Chair for two decades. He completed his residency training in Family Medicine at McGill University and subsequently specialized in Ophthalmology and Clinical Genetics at the University of Ottawa and Queen's University. MacDonald has held the position of Director in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Montreal. His research interests focus on inherited ocular disorders, particularly maculopathies and choroideremia. He has worked as a clinical geneticist ophthalmologist and has contributed significantly to the field of academic Ophthalmology, being elected Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences in recognition of his work in 2009. MacDonald has received several accolades, including a Lifetime Achievement award from the Canadian College of Medical Geneticists in 2021. He is also actively involved in teaching and research at Hôpital Ste-Justine Montreal associated with the University of Montreal.
