Biography

Ian MacLaren graduated from the University of Birmingham with a BSc (Hons) in Physics and subsequently completed a PhD in Metallurgy and Materials at the same institution. He has maintained a career-long focus on electron microscopy to understand materials and nanostructures at the smallest scales. Ian has held research positions at the University of Birmingham, Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden, the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing, China, the Max Planck Institute for Metallforschung in Stuttgart, Germany, and the Technical University of Darmstadt in Germany. He joined the University of Glasgow in a Lectureship position in 2004. His research primarily explores using electron microscopy to study the structure and chemistry of materials and devices at the nanoscale. His current research employs techniques such as Quantitative Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (DualEELS), Ultra-High Energy Loss Spectroscopy, and Scanned Diffraction (4D-STEM) with a focus on materials such as functional oxides, high-strength steels, optical coatings, and infrared semiconductor devices. Ian is also involved in leadership roles outside the university, including serving as an editor for Microscopy and Microanalysis with Cambridge University Press.
