Ian McArthur completed his PhD at Harvard University in supersymmetric quantum field theory and supergravity theory. He undertook postdoctoral fellowships at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics at the University of Cambridge and the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of Karlsruhe under Professor Julius Wess, one of the founders of supergravity theory. Subsequently, he held an Assistant Professorship at the Institute of Theoretical Physics at Hamburg University. He served as Head of the School of Physics at the University of Western Australia (UWA) for 18 years, starting in 2000. During his tenure at UWA, he was awarded the Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship, which he completed at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich. McArthur was granted the title of Emeritus Professor in January 2021. His external positions include Chair of the National Committee for Physics at the Australian Academy of Science from 2017 to 2020 and membership in the National Executive of the Australian Institute of Physics from 2013 to 2018. He was also part of the ARC College of Experts from January 2010 to December 2012.
