Biography

Ian Mosby is a historian specializing in food, Indigenous health politics, and settler colonialism. He joined the Department of History at Toronto Metropolitan University in 2019. Mosby's current research focuses on the history of human biomedical experimentation involving Indigenous peoples in Canada during the mid-twentieth century. He has published extensively on various topics, including the history of monosodium glutamate (MSG), anti-Chinese racism, and the long-term health impacts of hunger and malnutrition, particularly in relation to residential schools. His work has made national headlines, and in August 2016, he was recognized as one of the 53 influential people in Canadian food by The Globe and Mail. Mosby's book, 'Food Will Win the War: The Politics, Culture, and Science of Food on Canada's Home Front,' published by UBC Press in 2014, received the 2015 Political History Book Prize from the Canadian Historical Association and was shortlisted for the Canada Prize in the Humanities by the Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences.
