Dr. Ian Murray

Biography

Ian Murray is a professor at the University of Western Australia’s Law School where he specializes in Taxation, Corporations, and Not-for-Profit Law. His research focuses on the intersection of Not-for-Profit Law, Tax, Trusts, and Corporate Governance. Ian has extensive experience as a practitioner, providing advice on not-for-profit tax issues and has worked in the resource and energy industries. He has served in various roles such as Deputy Head of the Law School and has been involved in community engagement initiatives. A member of significant academic and professional committees, Ian is also a board member of the Charity Law Association Australia New Zealand and has co-convened the Not-for-Profit Researchers' Network. His academic qualifications include a PhD from the University of Tasmania and multiple law degrees from the University of New South Wales and the University of Western Australia. Ian has been recognized with several awards for his research and teaching contributions, notably the Virginia Hodgkinson Research Book Prize and multiple teaching awards. His current research projects include studies on organizational purpose, governance, and legal constraints faced by charities, closely linked to his teaching of courses like Legal Issues Not-for-Profit Entities and Corporations Law.
