Biography

Ian Nabney is a Professor at the University of Bristol with a focus on applications of neural networks and pattern recognition techniques. His research involves data visualization and probabilistic modeling, which are often inspired by industrial challenges in fields such as bioinformatics, biosignal processing, condition monitoring, remote sensing, and financial forecasting. He has developed the Netlab toolbox for neural networks, which has been widely used, as evidenced by over 1300 citations. Ian also served as the Director of the Cardionetics Institute of Bioinformatics, where he specialized in extracting clinically valuable information from electrocardiogram (ECG) data. His current research highlights include data visualization methods that enable users to visually analyze high-dimensional data, as well as time series analysis with applications in biomedical signal processing and machinery condition monitoring. Ian is affiliated with the Intelligent Systems Laboratory and has been an Honorary Visiting Professor at Aston University since October 2017.
