Biography

Ian Park is a barrister and Captain in the UK Royal Navy, with a distinguished career involving service on seven ships deployed worldwide in support of the Royal Navy’s defense contributions. He has served as a legal adviser during operations in Afghanistan and the Middle East on multiple occasions. Ian has been a Visiting Fellow at Harvard Law School, a Hudson Fellow at Oxford University, a Mountbatten Fellow at Cambridge University, and a Sea Lord’s Fellow as well as Freeman of the City of London. He graduated from St. John’s College, Cambridge, where he earned his doctorate in international law from Balliol College, Oxford. Ian has lectured at prestigious institutions, including Harvard Law School, Cambridge University, Oxford University, the Academy of Military Sciences in Beijing, and Freiburg University. He has contributed significantly to legal scholarship with four published books, including the monograph 'Right to Life in Armed Conflict' published by Oxford University Press in 2018. Currently, he teaches part-time at Edinburgh Law School and serves the UK Ministry of Defence.
