Biography

Ian Parkinson is a Reader at the University of Bristol, focusing on the development of techniques to measure isotope systems with high-precision accuracy using thermal plasma source mass spectrometry. His research addresses a variety of geological problems, employing both traditional fieldwork techniques and advanced isotopic data analysis. Parkinson's research interests encompass the utilization of stable chromium isotopes to investigate the redox state of both modern and ancient oceans and the evolution of the oxygen atmosphere. He also studies high-precision stable radiogenic strontium isotopic data to understand past ocean chemistry in relation to weathering and climate change, applying lithium and strontium isotopes to explore high-temperature isotope fractionation in both terrestrial and extraterrestrial materials. Additionally, he has a keen interest in the geochemistry and petrology of recent volcanic rocks in the Greater Caucasus region of Georgia. Currently, he leads various research projects, including the NERC-FAPESP Marine Gateways Project, which seeks to quantify the causes and climatic consequences of the opening of the South Atlantic, where he serves as the Principal Investigator.
