Biography

Professor Ian N Proops joined the Department of Philosophy at the University of Texas at Austin in 2009. His research focuses on several areas including Kant's philosophy, particularly the 'Critique of Pure Reason', and the history of analytic philosophy, especially the works of Bertrand Russell and Ludwig Wittgenstein. He collaborates with Professor Roy Sorensen on topics related to the philosophy of deception and has interests in early modern philosophy, particularly the metaphysics of Descartes and Leibniz. Proops has taught for ten years at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where he earned his B.A. in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics from the University of Oxford and subsequently his Ph.D. at Harvard University, where he wrote his dissertation on Wittgenstein's 'Tractatus' under the supervision of Warren Goldfarb, Richard Heck, and Charles Parsons. He has served as the founding editor of the Review of Symbolic Logic and has been a section editor for more than a decade for the Philosophy Compass in the subfield of analytic philosophy. A notable recent publication of his is 'Fiery Test Critique: Reading Kant's Dialectic' published by Oxford University Press in 2021, and he continues to teach various graduate seminars and undergraduate courses.
