Biography

Ian Quinn holds degrees from Columbia University (B.A., 1993), Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester (M.A., 1998; Ph.D., 2004). Before joining the Yale faculty, he taught at the University of Chicago and the University of Oregon. Quinn was a Residential Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (CASBS) at Stanford in 2008-09. He has served on the editorial board of the Journal of Mathematics and Music, which he co-organized in 2007. He is also a co-organizer of the Northeast Music Cognition Group (NEMCOG) and organizes the Yale-New Haven Regular Singing (YNHRS), a weekly shape-note singing group. His publications have received honors from the Society for Music Theory, including the Emerging Scholar Award and the Outstanding Publication Award. He has supervised dissertations focusing on various aspects of music theory, including deep learning in music streaming and the analysis of harmonic expectations in historical contexts. Quinn's work spans multiple facets of music theory, and he continues to contribute significantly to the field through his teaching and research.
