Biography

Professor Ian Smith completed his degree in Newcastle, Tyne, England, and moved to Australia in 1984 to complete his PhD at Prince Henry's Institute, Melbourne, and Monash University. In 1991, he joined the Baker Heart Research Institute as Associate Director before moving to Monash University in 2004. Ian currently serves as Vice-Provost (Research & Research Infrastructure), overseeing research alliances and infrastructure while developing strategies to meet future university needs. His research applies proteomics technologies to study the proteases involved in generating and metabolizing peptide regulators crucial for brain and cardiovascular function. This work has resulted in over 250 publications and patents. He actively participates in international meetings as a plenary speaker and co-founded a proteomics-based biotechnology company. Ian is also involved in various advisory boards and committees, contributing to national and international scientific meetings.
