Biography

Ian Strachan is a Professor and Associate Head of Geography Undergraduate Programs at Queen's University. He embarked on his academic journey at the University of Toronto, where he studied Physical Geography. Strachan earned both his MSc and PhD degrees in Micrometeorology from Queen's University. His post-doctoral research was conducted at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, focusing on remote sensing measurements of greenhouse gas exchange. He spent two decades at McGill University in the Departments of Natural Resource Sciences and Geography, where he served as the founding Associate Dean of Graduate Education in the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. Strachan's research aims to develop an understanding of biophysical controls on carbon exchange in managed human-modified systems, addressing gaps in knowledge regarding fundamental processes of carbon exchange. His group conducts field-based research employing a variety of techniques to quantify ecosystem-scale greenhouse gas exchange, collaborating with industry partners across Canada.
