Dr. Ian Tregenza

Biography

Ian Tregenza is an Associate Professor at Macquarie University specializing in political theory and the history of political thought, particularly the intersection of religion and politics in Australian secularism. He obtained his PhD from the University of New South Wales in 1996 with a focus on political philosopher Michael Oakeshott and his engagement with 17th-century philosopher Thomas Hobbes. His revised dissertation was published as "Michael Oakeshott and Hobbes: A Study in Renewal of Philosophical Ideas" (Imprint Academic, 2003). Tregenza's academic work encompasses various aspects of Australian intellectual and political history, emphasizing broad hermeneutical questions of how philosophers interpret and utilize the past. He has published numerous journal articles and book chapters in this field, including co-authoring "Reason, Religion and the Australian Polity: A Secular State?" (Routledge, 2019). He teaches courses such as POIR2060 Modern Political Thought and POIR3050 Religion and Politics.
