Biography

Ian Walmsley is a leading figure in the field of quantum optics and ultrafast photonics, currently serving as the Director of the Oxford Quantum Institute. His research focuses on preparing, probing, and controlling quantum states of light and matter, with a particular emphasis on the application of quantum technologies. Walmsley developed the SPIDER technique, which allows for the precise characterization of femtosecond and attosecond light pulses. His group works on high-fidelity quantum sources, quantum memories, and advanced detectors, and is engaged in combining photons and atoms to build large entangled states for applications in simulation, computation, and machine learning. He has led major quantum technology initiatives within the UK, such as the NQIT, and serves on national advisory bodies that help shape the country's quantum strategy.
