Ian Wassell joined the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory as a Senior Lecturer in January 2006, previously serving in the Department of Engineering for approximately six and a half years. He earned his PhD from the University of Southampton in 1990, where he investigated Viterbi Equalization in wireless mobile systems, and holds BSc and BEng degrees from Loughborough University, obtained in 1983. With over 25 years of experience in simulation design for radio communication systems, he has held numerous positions in both industry and higher education. Since joining the University of Cambridge in May 1999, he has published more than 200 papers and has successfully supervised 29 PhD students and 6 MPhil students. His research focuses on the application of Artificial Intelligence in wireless communication systems. Additionally, he is a fellow at Churchill College, where he has supervised engineering students on topics related to linear systems and communication. He is a member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and has served on the local Cambridge committee for the organization. Ian was promoted to Professor (Grade 11) in October 2025.
