Biography

Dr. Ian Watson is a Reader in the Systems Power and Energy division at the University of Glasgow. His research interests encompass bioenergy, particularly the exploitation of microalgae, as well as laser systems for asteroid deflection and microorganism inactivation. With a PhD in Laser Systems and more than two decades of experience, Dr. Watson has led various funded research projects focusing on the development of laser sterilization systems and combined systems for extending the shelf life of food products. He is also recognized for his significant contributions to laser air decontamination technologies, resulting in a spin-off company specializing in plasma air treatment technologies. His work in biomass combustion and gasification systems has demonstrated the potential for high-power laser radiation to ignite biomass effectively. Additionally, Dr. Watson is actively engaged in research addressing the CO2 emissions and food insecurity challenges through innovative microalgal biofuel production. He has published extensively and currently supervises several PhD students, contributing actively to academic discourse in his fields of expertise.
