Dr. Ian Wei

Biography

Ian P Wei is an Associate Professor at the University of Bristol specializing in intellectual culture and social history of Western Europe during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. His published works explore the role of intellectuals in medieval society, particularly the authority and status of masters of theology at the University of Paris in the late thirteenth century. Wei's research examines the development of knowledge among learned men and women within their social and political contexts, focusing on themes such as political views, money, and sexuality. He co-coordinated a project titled 'Ideas Universities' with the Worldwide Universities Network that aimed to enhance understanding of how contemporary policy-making is influenced by ideas across varied institutional expressions in universities. He supervises a range of MA and PhD dissertations related to intellectual, cultural, and social history in medieval Europe, and he encourages research proposals focusing on various aspects of intellectual culture during the Middle Ages.
