Ian Whitmore was born in England to an English father and an Icelandic mother during World War II. He graduated from Guy's Hospital Medical School (University of London) with MBBS LRCP MRCS in 1968. He began teaching Anatomy in Manchester in 1970 after years of clinical experience as a junior hospital doctor. He earned his MD from the University of London in 1980 with research focused on Oesophageal Striated Muscle. Ian co-authored a textbook titled 'Human Anatomy,' first published in 1985, which has reached its sixth edition. In 1990, he moved to Queen Mary & Westfield College in London as a Senior Lecturer in Anatomy and took early retirement in 1996. He has been a Visiting Professor at Stanford since 1984, became a Full Professor in 2002, and continues to teach there. He chaired the Federated International Committee Anatomical Terminology from 1989 to 2009 and published significant terminologies in 1998, 2007, and 2013. His contributions to anatomical terminology earned him Honored Member status from the American Association of Clinical Anatomists and honorary memberships from anatomical societies in various countries. In 2010, he received the Jubilee Medal for his contributions to morphology from the All-Russian Scientific Society of Anatomists, Histologists, and Embryologists, and was appointed Fellow of the Anatomical Society in 2012.
