Biography

Professor Ian Wilson is a leading researcher in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology at the University of Cambridge. His research interests focus on soft solids and their applications in food, pharmaceutical, and chemical industries. He studies micro-structured materials, particularly the formation and processing behavior of structured semi-solid materials, such as solid-liquid pastes and doughs. His work involves understanding the physics of these materials using principles from plasticity theory, fluid mechanics, and rheology. He is also engaged in studying bubbly liquids and complex food fluids. As part of the Paste, Particle Polymer Processing Group, he collaborates with various researchers and addresses fundamental phenomena like wall slip and liquid phase migration. In the area of fouling and cleaning mechanisms, he investigates the formation and removal of unwanted micro-structured materials in heat transfer processes, especially in the food industry. His contributions include developing models for paste forming processes and designing cleaning strategies for heat exchangers. Ian Wilson received his ScD from the University of Cambridge in 2013 for his work in soft solids and fouling cleaning cycles, and co-led the EPSRC Networking project on quantitative modeling in cleaning and decontamination.
