Iannis Aifantis is the Hermann M. Biggs Professor of Pathology at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. His lab focuses on the molecular mechanisms of differentiation and transformation of hematopoietic stem cells and their progenitors, particularly in relation to lymphoid and myeloid leukemias. The research has identified and studied several novel oncogenes and tumor suppressors, contributing to a deeper understanding of the signaling pathways involved in leukemia initiation and progression. Additionally, Aifantis’s laboratory investigates the mechanisms of hematopoietic stem cell differentiation and self-renewal using genomic and genetic approaches. Current research areas include the impact of DNA methylation on stem cell transformation, mapping long non-coding RNAs in human tumors, and the roles of RNA-binding proteins in leukemia transformation. Aifantis received his PhD from the University of Paris and completed postdoctoral training at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School, specializing in immunology.
