Biography

Ignacio Grossmann is the Rudolph R. Florence Dean University Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University and has served as the former department head. He earned his B.S. degree from Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City in 1974, followed by an M.S. and Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Imperial College London in 1975 and 1977, respectively. He is a member and director of the Center for Advanced Process Decision-Making, which collaborates with a consortium of 20 petroleum, chemical, engineering, and software companies. Grossmann is also a member of the National Academy of Engineering. He has received numerous awards from AIChE, including the Computing in Chemical Engineering Award and the William H. Walker Excellence in Publications Award. In 2015, he received the Sargent Medal from IChemE, and in 2025, he was selected as a Foreign Academic in the Chemical Physical Sciences Section of the Royal Academy of Exact, Physical, and Natural Sciences in Spain. He has been honored with several honorary doctorates from various international universities. His main research interests include discrete and continuous optimization, optimal synthesis and planning of chemical processes and energy systems, and supply chain optimization. Grossmann has supervised 68 Ph.D. students and 34 M.S. students throughout his career.
