Dr. Ignazio Viola

Biography

Ignazio Maria Viola is a Professor of Fluid Mechanics and Bioinspired Engineering at the University of Edinburgh, where he leads the VOILAb research group. His academic background includes a PhD in Experimental Numerical Aerodynamics from Politecnico di Milano, as well as a Master of Engineering in Naval Architecture from Università degli studi di Genova. He has received numerous accolades for his work, including the RINA Medals Distinction Medal for Exceptional Merit, and he was recognized as a Covid-19 Hero for his significant contributions to addressing challenges posed by the pandemic. Viola has been instrumental in securing over £18 million in research grants, serving as Principal Investigator for key projects and collaborating with various institutions such as Tsinghua University and the University of Bologna. His research interests span Fluid Mechanics, Marine Energy, Naval Architecture, and Aerodynamics, with a focus on innovative applications including wind and tidal energy. Viola holds several editorial positions, including Editor-in-Chief of the Journal Sailing Technology and Associate Editor for multiple other prestigious journals. He actively engages in professional societies and composes influential engineering publications.
