Biography

Igo Besselink is an Associate Professor and Chair of Vehicle Dynamics at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). His key area of expertise is Vehicle Dynamics, particularly the analysis of road vehicle motions, vibrations, stability in steering, driving, and braking under external disturbances. Igo’s main research interests include the dynamics of commercial vehicles, tire behavior modeling, and the control of battery electric vehicles. His research focuses on the development of simulation models to analyze and improve the performance of road vehicles, with a strong emphasis on validating models through experiments and using multiple test rigs for prototype vehicles in active development within the Automotive Technology lab at TU/e. His ultimate aim is to achieve safe and efficient transport while minimizing the environmental impact. Looking ahead, his research plans include exploring autonomous operation of articulated commercial vehicles in confined areas such as distribution centers. Igo studied mechanical engineering at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) and obtained his MSc in vehicle dynamics in 1990. He joined Fokker Aircraft and worked on landing gear dynamics, later joining TNO Automotive to develop the ‘Delft-Tyre’ simulation software. He received his PhD from TU Delft in 2000 and began working as a part-time lecturer at TU/e, becoming a full-time assistant professor in 2008 and being appointed to his current role in 2016. Igo has supervised 6 PhD students and 80 Master students and is a (co)-author of 50 journal and conference publications.
