Biography

Igor Mel’čuk is a prominent linguist, recognized for his work in general linguistic theory, particularly in semantics, syntax, and morphology. He has contributed significantly to lexicography, focusing on the French language, and has conducted studies on exotic languages including African, Australian, Siberian, and Caucasian tongues. Mel’čuk is well-known for developing the Meaning-Text Theory, which integrates lexical, grammatical, and semantic aspects. He began his academic career at the University of Montreal in 1978 after receiving an honorary doctorate from the University of Besançon. Originally from Ukraine, Mel’čuk earned his doctorate from the USSR Academy of Sciences in 1962 and has dedicated several decades to advancing linguistic research at the University of Montreal, co-founding the Observatory of Meaning-Text Linguistics. Throughout his illustrious career, he has been honored with several awards, including memberships in the Royal Society of Canada and corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, along with two Killam Scholarships.
