Biography

Ilaria Rebay is a Professor in the Department of Molecular Genetics and Cell Biology at the University of Chicago. Her scholarly interests focus on cell fate specification, particularly in the context of Drosophila, and the intricate processes involved in retinal development, signal transduction pathways, and transcription factor networks. Her research aims to understand how signaling networks and tissue geometry work together to influence developmental decisions. By utilizing Drosophila as a tractable model system, Rebay explores how cell fates are specified and how organized functional tissues and organs are formed. Her experimental approach is multidisciplinary, incorporating methodologies from molecular genetics, genomics, quantitative imaging, biochemistry, and mathematical modeling. Current projects in her lab investigate transcriptional networks and the cellular mechanisms regulating the stabilization of progenitor cells as they transition to specified fates, as well as the tissue-level biomechanical properties that drive terminal differentiation and morphogenesis.
